How to send salutations and blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his family?

The Quran commands us to send salutations and blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 56:

"Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace."

The most common way of sending salutations and blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) is by saying "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin" (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon his family). This is also known as Durood-e-Ibrahimi or Durood-e-Sharif. There are many other forms of salutations and blessings that have been taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself or by his companions. Some examples are:

  • "Allahumma salli 'ala sayyidina Muhammadin wa 'ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallim" (O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad and upon his family and companions and grant them peace).

  • "Allahumma salli wa sallim 'ala nabiyyina Muhammadin" (O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our prophet Muhammad).

  • "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatihi kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahima" (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon his wives and offspring as You have blessed Ibrahim and his family).

  • "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahima" (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon his family as You have blessed Ibrahim and his family).

We can send salutations and blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his family at any time and in any situation. However, there are some occasions when it is more recommended and rewarding to do so, such as:

  • During the five daily prayers, after the tashahhud and before the salam.

  • On Fridays, especially during the Jumu'ah prayer and before the khutbah.

  • On the night of Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power) in Ramadan.

  • On the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

  • On the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal, the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

  • Whenever we hear or mention the name of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

  • Whenever we visit the grave of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Madinah.

Sending salutations and blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his family is a sign of our love, gratitude, and obedience to him. It is also a means of attaining his love, intercession, and companionship in Paradise. Therefore, we should make it a habit to send salutations and blessings upon him frequently and sincerely.
